Hurdle’s Walk-Off Gives Wake Forest Fungo Victory Over Fuquay-Varina Twins
Saturday, July 31, 2021 – Wake Forest, NC
Wake Forest Fungo defeated Fuquay-Varina Twins 15-14 on Saturday thanks to a walk-off single. The game was tied at 14 with Wake Forest Fungo batting in the bottom of the ninth when Rufus Hurdle singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.
Wake Forest Fungo built a six-run lead in the first inning and then held off Fuquay-Varina Twins‘s charge. Fuquay-Varina Twins tallied 14 runs in the failed comeback. Andrew Johnston, RJ Johnson, Davie Morgan, Corbin Lanowitz, Jacob Raby, and Lanowitz fueled the rally with RBIs.
Wake Forest Fungo opened up scoring in the first inning. Hogan Stallings drew a walk, scoring one run.
After Fuquay-Varina Twins scored one run in the top of the sixth, Wake Forest Fungo answered with one of their own. Fuquay-Varina Twins scored when Lanowitz singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. Wake Forest Fungo then answered when Hurdle singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.
Fuquay-Varina Twins scored five runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught by Fuquay-Varina Twins was led by Johnston, Johnson, Morgan, and Lanowitz, all driving in runs in the frame.
Carson Hinnant got the win for Wake Forest Fungo. Hinnant lasted one inning, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out one and walking zero. Kei Yamagishi, Matt Stanley, and Caleb Fluno all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
Ty Cummings took the loss for Fuquay-Varina Twins. The righthander went one inning, allowing three runs on four hits and walking one.
Shea Ward started the game for Wake Forest Fungo. The pitcher went five innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out three Chandler Williford started the game for Fuquay-Varina Twins. Williford went one-third of an inning, allowing five runs on zero hits
Wake Forest Fungo tallied one home run on the day. Fluno went for the long ball in the first inning.
Wake Forest Fungo scattered 11 hits in the game. Ryan Warren, Tristan Marsh, Bryan Arendt, and Hurdle all collected multiple hits for Wake Forest Fungo. Hurdle, Arendt, Marsh, and Warren all had two hits to lead Wake Forest Fungo. Wake Forest Fungo tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Jayson Arendt led the way with two.
Fuquay-Varina Twins totaled ten hits. Lanowitz, Raby, Johnson, and Morgan each had multiple hits for Fuquay-Varina Twins. Lanowitz went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead Fuquay-Varina Twins in hits.
