Greenbrier Knights Walk It Off Against Coconuts Baseball
It came down to the wire on Thursday at War Memorial Stadium, as Greenbrier Knights grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 7-6, over Coconuts Baseball. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the ninth when Dylan Whitmire singled, scoring one run.
Greenbrier Knights built a 5-run lead in the fifth inning and then held off Coconuts Baseball’s charge. Coconuts Baseball closed the gap by scoring on a tag up, a walk, a ground out, and a double.
Coconuts Baseball opened the scoring in the third after Sean Cherry singled, scoring one run.
Greenbrier Knights flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 5-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Ryan Hummel following a 6-pitch at-bat that drove in two.
Cherry doubled to center field, which helped Coconuts Baseball tie the game at six in the top of the ninth.
Hummel earned the win for Greenbrier Knights. The righty gave up one hit and one run over one inning, striking out two and walking one. E Coston took the loss for Coconuts Baseball. The pitcher went four innings, surrendering one run (zero earned) on four hits, striking out six and walking two.
Gavin Stevens began the game for Greenbrier Knights. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and one run over five innings, striking out five and walking three.
Jacob Lawrence stepped on the mound first for Coconuts Baseball. The starter surrendered six hits and five runs over three innings, striking out two and walking four. Childers Winn threw one inning of shutout ball for Greenbrier Knights in relief. The hurler gave up zero hits, striking out two and walking two.
Greenbrier Knights tallied 10 hits in the game. Hummel drove the middle of the lineup, leading Greenbrier Knights with two runs batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-4 on the day. Greenbrier Knights’s Whitmire, the number seven hitter, led Greenbrier Knights with three hits in three at bats. Warren Bailey collected two hits for Greenbrier Knights in three at bats. Greenbrier Knights had patience at the plate, tallying eight walks for the game. Nolan Williford and Sylvester Clark led the team with two walks each. Tre Keels stole two bases.
Leadoff hitter Cherry led Coconuts Baseball with three hits in five at bats. Ahmaad Goldson led Coconuts Baseball with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing eight walks for the game. Coconuts Baseball turned one double play in the game.
